ENGLISH

Habits are an aspect of our lives in which all, in one-way or another, should be interested. We know that the formation of good habits can help us to live a better life. A habit is a recurrent behaviour for a particular circumstance, which is acquired with the repetition and that eventually ends manifesting itself in an unconscious manner.

The main benefit of the acquisition of a habit is that it eliminates the need to decide and the need for self-control. If we examine the habit of brushing our teeth, we realize that it is something that happens naturally, without having to decide or to push ourselves to do it. Because it is a habit, we do not ask ourselves every day, should I brush?

Not having to resort to self-control or willingness to behave in a way that benefits our health, work, and relationships is important, among other things because even when we decide to resist temptation, self-control may be exhausted and we end up eating another cookie, watching another episode on TV, or responding inappropriately. Forming a habit makes it unnecessary to decide each time whether we do or not do something.

Another very important aspect is the quality of habit we are establishing. By nature we are likely to repeat actions, and research has found that stress causes us to return to our habits, it does not  matter if they are good or bad. Hence the importance of creating our habits consciously, choosing those that are good for us. This way, when we engage in our habits or turn to them in times of stress, they can help to improve the situation rather than worsening it.

The constant repetition of our habits gives shape to our life, and choosing good habits can affect our destiny positively.
